In a six-day span, tornadoes claimed the lives of nearly 180 victims and numerous other storms threatened to add insult to injury after the original May 22 twister. Nearly one-third of the entire town was left in shambles and caused nearly 3 million dollars in damage and insurance claims to houses and businesses, including completely destroying St. John’s Regional Medical Center. In Sedalia, Mo., several hours northeast of Joplin, no one was seriously injured, but people’s lives were affected nevertheless. The Beebe’s had to pick up their lives and move in with their parents until new housing options arouse. They were lucky enough to be able to salvage most of their belongings.
